The world literally opened itself up to the University of Alberta (U of A) Mining Club this past year.
Thanks to the support of SMS Equipment, club members recently participated in a global mining conference while others represented Team Canada at the World Mining Competition back in the fall.
CIM Conference in Vancouver
This past May, the U of A Mining Club sent 13 Mining Engineering students to the CIM Convention in Vancouver. CIM, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, is the leading professional association for the minerals industry with members across Canada and around the world. The U of A student delegates participated in mining leadership forums, technical discussions, social events, and interacted with hundreds of mining companies at the Expo, including members of SMS Equipment who were also in attendance. Tyler Sieben Co-VP External, U of A Mining Club, was pleased to report that the CIM Convention was an excellent educational opportunity for the students who attended and was proud to share the experience with SMS Equipment.
World Mining Competition
Five members of the U of A Mining Club were competing with the best on earth at the World Mining Competition this past October in Saskatoon. Thanks to the support of SMS Equipment, four U of A students formed their own U of A team, while another U of A Mining Club member joined members of the University of Saskatoon, Dalhousie University, University of Lethbridge in forming a “Team Canada”. Competing against teams from Eastern Canada, India, the United States, Chile and Germany, students were given 36 hours to compete in two separate competitions. Travis Golinowski, VP External - U of A Mining Club, proudly informed SMS Equipment that the Uof Aplaced second in the competition while Team Canada placed sixth overall. It was a big accomplishment for the U of A as this was the first time the school made it to the finals.
